A camp for timber cutters in the 1860s, Cooroy had two sawmills then, and has been known for its fine woodwork ever since. Later, dairy and fruit growing industries flourished there too. Cooroy was named after Mount Cooroora — which means possum — 12 kilometres to the north, where there is a state forest and hiking trail. It takes a couple of very challenging hours to walk up to the top and then back down again, but in the King of the Mountain race every July competitors complete the 4.2 kilometre race in under half an hour.

In Cooroy, heritage buildings stand next to award-winning modern buildings. It’s a buzzy, bustling little town and there is no shortage of things to do and see. In fact, it would obviously be a nice town to settle down in and build a house. The old butter factory has been turned into an arts centre, which shows work by local and national artists, and has an excellent, well-stocked library, but the real jewel in Cooroy’s crown is the impeccably maintained Noosa Botanic Gardens and its Greek amphitheatre on the shores of Lake Macdonald, six kilometres away, where you can fish, bird watch and canoe to your heart’s content.

There are a challenging golf course with a resident platypus, and a rich and remarkable variety of shops, cafés, bars and restaurants — also fun markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays at nearby Eumundi — and plenty of parking. In fact, Cooroy has a vibrant community and it would be a joy to live there.
