A little background
Most of the towns on the Sunshine Coast grew up around the timber industry and the export of cedar logs. Roads were established to haul timber to the ports, and then there was a short-lived gold rush at Gympie in 1867, when the railway line was built. In the 1890s sugar cane and pineapples became the most important crops when dairy and fruit farming replaced the timber and beef industries.
