The last couple of years has seen some big changes in the way we live here in Australia. The combination of housing affordability pressures, financial constraints and the impact of COVID-19 has meant more and more young people are opting to live with their parents for longer than before. But that’s not all; baby boomers are moving back in with their adult kids for the convenience of being close to family, and to assist with health issues.

So what does this trend mean for home designs? It means there’s a rise in multi-generational home designs and dual-living homes. We’ve also had an increase in requests for granny flats to accommodate other family members.

How does a multi-generational home differ from a regular home?

It’s up to you really, and what your family requires, but essentially the main living areas remain as is – open plan living, kitchen spaces, spaces to relax and unwind – albeit they’re a little larger than regular homes to accommodate multiple generations of adult living under the same roof.

The biggest difference, however, is that multigenerational homes will have two master bedrooms, often with one upstairs and one downstairs. It’s also important to accommodate versatile and flexible spaces that can serve different purposes, for different family members. Ensuring you have ample outdoor and alfresco areas will also help to ease the burden of multiple people living together.

Granny flats are another great option

Granny flats are self-contained living spaces built within the grounds of a family home. Usually designed for one or two people, granny flats offer the benefit of added security and peace of mind, especially for elderly family members.

Adding a granny flat to your property is a great way to increase the value of your property.
