The Kabi people are the traditional custodians of Caboolture. Originally they lived on the fish, shellfish and game they caught, and every March they held Bunya Festivals where there was much singing, dancing, storytelling, trading and marriage-broking. In the 1840s colonists started to experiment with planting sugar cane and cotton, and 20 years later the settlement was a supply and trading centre for miners trekking from Brisbane to the Gympie gold mines. Caboolture is still a regional transport hub and now has its own airstrip.
History comes to life
Caboolture is only an hour from Brisbane, and its white sand and mountain scenery charm and delight visitors to the Sunshine Coast. Most unexpected though is the opportunity to see medieval and renaissance stained glass glittering in the Queensland sunshine. The Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology is a remarkable and extensive treasure trove of well displayed, well labelled artefacts, and one of Queensland’s most important, world class attractions, which vies for visitors with the Caboolture Historical Village where, if you want to conjure up some nostalgia, you will find four hectares of yesteryear with over 70 buildings, and more than 110,000 museum pieces.
Birds and song
Then there are the splendidly named and spectacular Pumistone Passage, and the glorious marine sanctuary off Bribie Island, home to many dolphins, dugongs, turtles and over 350 kinds of bird. For something more up-to-date, at the end of April Caboolture holds a Country Music Jamboree, and in June there is the Caboolture Show and Ute Muster.
These are all pretty good reasons to come and settle on the Sunshine Coast, to enjoy the views and the camaraderie, beaches and trails, and to bury your head in the soft, fine sand — to forget the rest of the world and its problems and politics. Another great advantage is the weather, with temperatures seldom under nine degrees or over 30°.
